Sanford Meisner is a quiet force behind the modern history of American acting. He is an open secret, known to generations of the most successful and admired actors, writers, and directors, many of who were his devoted students. However, most outside this group have never heard of the master teacher. who influenced more careers than all of the top acting teachings in America combined.

This acting course will take you through all the techniques Meisner taught as well as share many pitfalls to avoid when working with acting partners or directors. In this course, you will learn tricks and tools for placing all of your attention on your acting partner as a way of eliciting unexpected and colorful behavior from yourself and the others in the scene. You will also learn the value of learning your lines by rote- that is- with no inflection of meaning- as if the lines were like a phone number.
He found release in playing the family piano and eventually attended the Damrosch Institute of Music (now the Juilliard School), where he studied to become a concert pianist. When the Great Depression hit, however, his father pulled him out of music school to help with the family business in New York City's Garment District. Meisner later recalled that his only means of enduring long days spent lugging bolts of fabric was to entertain himself by replaying, in his mind, all the classical piano pieces he had studied in music school. Meisner believed this experience helped him develop, at age twenty, an acute sense of sound akin to perfect pitch. Later, as an acting teacher, he often evaluated his students' scene work with his eyes closed and his head dramatically buried in his hands. This trick was only partly for effect, he explained, because it actually helped him more closely listen to his student's work and pinpoint the true and false moments in their acting.
Though he rarely appeared on film, he performed in Tender Is the Night, The Story on Page One, and Mikey and Nicky. His last acting role was in the season one episode of the television medical drama ER, titled "Sleepless in Chicago". Actor Noah Wyle worked with him and referred to the experience as the highlight of his career.
Acting at its best is a creative, transformational art. Actors must work incredibly hard in order to master their acting instrument. The Northern Illinois University Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Arts degree with an Emphasis in Acting provides individualized, challenging, and disciplined training in performance. Areas of concentration are acting techniques, voice and speech, movement, text analysis, period styles, on-camera work, auditioning, and professional development. The MFA Acting Program provides a strong foundation for working in the performing arts industry and prepares actors for sustainability in the industry by not only developing acting talents but also creating space for the innovation, resiliency, and entrepreneurship required to make a life in art.
The Program expands beyond conventional graduate actor training to include courses in entrepreneurship, international theater, social justice, and content creation to prepare student actors for the challenges of the industry, as artists and as global citizens. While a majority of MFA courses will focus on Acting, students will also have the opportunity to take classes and masterclasses across various fields of expertise; allowing them to enter the field as well-rounded artists and creators. These additional components may include, and are not limited to: masterclasses in business, workshops in podcast and other digital media creation; various on-camera classes and projects; and courses in performance across cultures and international theater-making.
As part of the Miami International Film Festival, IAFFM, a masterclass on the Meisner acting technique will be held from November 3 to 7, for actors and directors. This intensive training will be taught by Maria Gowland and Stephen Bayly, both of whom have an extensive experience in film and teaching. Among the renowned performers who have mastered this technique are Michelle Pfeiffer, David Mamet, Sydney Pollack, Naomi Watts, Steve McQueen, and Jeff Goldblum, to name just a few.
You'll learn to approach acting from the perspective of an artist. You'll develop an actor's "practice" that will serve you for life. You'll master techniques that open the doors to creative inspiration and remarkable performance.
THE MEISNER TECHNIQUE is a powerful and systematic approach to truthful acting. For film and television acting in particular, behaving truthfully under imaginary circumstances is the bottom line. Actors who can do that, get noticed. They get remembered. And they get work.
